The Woodlands has one of the largest collections of public art in Texas, and one of the most unique – and practical – are the art benches. If you’ve walked along The Woodlands Waterway or the shore of Lake Woodlands at Hughes Landing, you’ve probably seen a few. Last year, six new art benches were added to the collection.

These benches were created by local, national, and international artists with different styles and techniques. Each bench was underwritten by a local business or individual who filled out a questionnaire about their personal feelings toward the location of their bench. Artists then used this questionnaire to develop designs for the bench, and the underwriter chose which design resonated with them the most.

The concept was started by The Woodlands Arts Council, a non-profit organization with the mission to promote public art and the creative economy. The Arts Council raises the money, selects the artists and then works with The Woodlands Township on the site selection. After the bench is complete, ownership of the benches is assumed by The Woodlands Township who then maintains the benches throughout their useful life. Read the backstory behind the new six art benches, then take a stroll and experience their beauty firsthand.

Sound of Healing Art Bench at Hughes Landing in The Woodlands, Texas
SOUND OF HEALING

This bench symbolizes the journey to healing that patients experience at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands. The windchimes ring out as wind blows underneath the bench, reminiscent of the tradition of ringing the bell at the end of cancer treatments. The multiple windchimes, some of which might make sound while others remain quiet until the next gust of wind, act as a reminder that none are alone in their journey to healing.

State of Texas art bench
STATE OF TEXAS

Patriotism for the state of Texas is celebrated with this art bench by Houston artist, Carolina Gonzales. The art bench brings together classic western design with a Texas-shaped metal piece that’s painted like a turquoise gem, and the live edge cedar bench seat. This bench also acts as a trolley stop, making it a great photo-op where visitors can point to where they’re from before boarding the Town Center Trolley and continuing their adventure in The Woodlands.

Angel Wings art bench
ANGEL WINGS

Further north along The Waterway, behind The Westin at The Woodlands, is a beautiful bench that’s as eye-catching as it is touching. Look on the back of this bench for a heartfelt poem, written by underwriter Maria Holmes.

“Our memories build a special bridge when loved ones have to part, to help us feel with them still, and span the years of our lives, preserving ties that bind, and bring us peace of mind.”

Underwritten by: Frank and Maria Holmes in memory of their son, Yancey M. Holmes

Free Spirit art bench
FREE SPIRIT

Feathers symbolize different things in a variety of cultures. Feathers can mean courage, spirituality, travel, or truth. At this whimsical bench, two feathers symbolize flight and freedom, as well as the childhood wonder of discovering the world around you and spreading your wings in pursuit of pure joy. This bench is a reminder that no matter your age or culture, you can experience lightness and freedom.

Seated with Santiago art bench
SEATED WITH SANTIAGO

In Ernest Hemingway’s novel, Old Man and The Sea, the main character Santiago must overcome many trials to succeed. This bench is a reminder of his story, and how we all – especially those who have served our Country – are heroes in our resolve and resilience. The looming waves on the back of this bench are a reminder of the impact that we can all have if we push forward through our hardships, continue to swim, and rise above the water.
