National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) is a 40+ year-old tradition that celebrates and advocates for the tourism industry in the U.S. This year, Visit The Woodlands will join destinations around the country in celebrating NTTW, May 19-25, 2024, with special events and discounts.
"We're looking forward to participating in National Travel and Tourism Week," said Nick Wolda, President of Visit The Woodlands. "It's always a great opportunity to highlight the impact of tourism in our national, statewide, and local economy."
TOURISM'S ECONOMIC IMPACT
On a national scale, tourism left a $2.8 trillion economic footprint in the U.S. last year while simultaneously supporting over 15 million American jobs. It also generated $89 billion in state and local tax revenue in 2023 that went back into communities' essential services, such as education, emergency response, public safety, and more.
Travel and tourism also has a large economic footprint in The Woodlands. In 2022, tourism generated nearly $40 million in tax revenue for our local community. The Woodlands also experienced a record year for hotel tax revenue in 2023, surpassing 2019 levels with a record-breaking $9.6 million.
This is incredibly important in The Woodlands, because nearly 60% of The Woodlands Township's budget is comprised of Hotel Tax and Sales Tax. The revenue generated by our local tourism industry allows The Woodlands Township to keep resident and business taxes low, while also planning for future enhancements in the area that will draw in more visitors and increase quality of life for residents.
